Dear Jules,

I’ve moved around for the last 6 years. I have a marketing degree, but I dread the thought of another administrative position or sales assistant position. I’m not experienced with up to date online marketing and feeling behind and competing with new graduates even though I have a over 10 years working experience. I need a change but I can’t seem to figure out what I’m made to do or will be happy with on a daily basis. It’s important to me to feel like I have a skill and can contribute and feel good about myself. However lately I’m feeling so confused and need a job. Help!

Asking for help is a great step forward! If you need a job immediately for financial reasons then please make sure that you get something to keep you supported. I am not sure how quickly the processes I am about to suggest will bring solutions for you, but being in a state of confusion is a great place to be as it means that your brain is looking to solve this for you. There are two key aspects in your request that I want to pick up on; figuring out what you are made to do and feeling good about yourself. Let me be clear up front that the first does not lead to the second, in fact it is the other way around. I get the sense that you are experiencing low self confidence and this will impact on your job search so my suggestion is to start working on that first. Make a conscious choice daily to notice when you are feeling happy/joyful; reading, writing, learning, talking etc and actively look to do these daily, even if only for 5 minutes. Please note that you do not have to be good at this thing, it’s about you enjoying it! Part two of this process is to acknowledge all that you do on a daily basis, regardless of the outcomes. You can do this either by saying it aloud or writing it down. Just thinking about it is not enough! Both of these simple practices will support you in first growing your confidence. Then let’s look at finding the work you were made to do. Write a detailed description of your dream week at work; who you work with, your commute, office or outside etc Read this once a week adapting as more ideas come to mind. Get a real sense of what you want and what brings you joy. For this process there is not job title being attached, it’s just you dreaming. The more you dream/imagine/create the more open you become to opportunities and possibilities and in fact you give that confused brain some direction. Please do let me know how you get on!

Remember, believe in yourself.
